Reading Speed Test

How fast can you read? Finish the passage and get your reading speed in WPM.

How to play

  • Press Start — a passage appears and the timer starts instantly.
  • Read at your natural pace, no skimming, no skipping.
  • Tap 'Done reading' the moment you finish. The number is words per minute; the grade depends on how long you took.

The Reading Speed Test times how long you take to read one passage at your normal pace. The timer starts the moment the passage appears and stops when you tap "Done reading"; your score is the passage's word count divided by your reading time in minutes, or words per minute (WPM). A tap within the first two seconds doesn't count and the test restarts. There are no comprehension questions, so the number is only as honest as your reading: no skimming, no skipping.

For reference, a 2019 meta-analysis of 190 studies by psychologist Marc Brysbaert put the average silent reading rate of English-speaking adults at about 238 WPM for non-fiction and 260 WPM for fiction. Rates vary with the language and the text, and languages with longer words produce fewer words per minute, so the fairest comparison is with people reading in the same language. Grades, however, are based on time rather than this number: every language version is a translation of the same English passage, and the IReST study (Trauzettel-Klosinski & Dietz, 2012) found that readers of 17 languages got through the same translated text at almost the same rate, about 1.42 texts per minute, although it measured reading aloud. Finishing in 28.2 seconds or less earns S, up to 42.3 seconds A, up to 56.4 seconds B and up to 84.6 seconds C, which matches 600, 400, 300 and 200 WPM on the 282-word English passage. Treat speed-reading promises with care: a 2016 review led by Keith Rayner found that large speed gains from speed-reading techniques usually come at the cost of comprehension, while a broader vocabulary and regular reading are what reliably help.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q. How is reading speed calculated?

    A. The number shown is the word count divided by your reading time in minutes (words per minute, WPM), and taps within the first two seconds are not recorded. Your grade depends only on time: 28.2 seconds or less is S, up to 42.3 s A, up to 56.4 s B, up to 84.6 s C, and anything slower D.

  • Q. Does the test check comprehension?

    A. No. There are no questions after the passage, so read at your usual pace without skimming; otherwise the WPM won't reflect how fast you really read.

  • Q. What is an average reading speed?

    A. For English-speaking adults, a 2019 meta-analysis by Marc Brysbaert estimated about 238 WPM for non-fiction and 260 WPM for fiction in silent reading. Averages differ by language and by how hard the text is.

  • Q. Can speed reading make you read faster and understand more?

    A. Usually not both. A 2016 scientific review led by Keith Rayner concluded that speed-reading techniques raise speed mainly through skimming, which lowers comprehension. Building vocabulary and reading regularly are more reliable ways to read faster.
