Sea Battle

Hide your fleet of 5 ships on a 10x10 grid and sink the computer's fleet first. Fewer shots win.

How to play

  • Hide your fleet of 5 ships (5, 4, 3, 3 and 2 cells) on a 10×10 grid. Ships may touch but can’t overlap.
  • Take turns firing at the enemy grid. Orange means a hit, a gray dot means a miss.
  • One shot per turn, hit or miss. Hit every cell of a ship to sink it.
  • Sink the whole enemy fleet first to win. The fewer shots you need, the better your score.

AI level

Once it scores a hit, it hunts the cells around it.

Sea Battle is the classic grid-and-coordinates game, free to play online against the computer. You and the AI each hide a fleet of five ships (5, 4, 3, 3 and 2 cells long) on a 10x10 grid. Place them randomly in one tap or place them yourself with a tap and rotate as you like. Then take turns firing one shot at a coordinate. Every shot is marked as a hit, a miss or a sunk ship, and the first side to sink the whole enemy fleet wins. Pick easy, normal or hard AI: normal hunts around every hit, hard plays the odds with a probability map. Your result shows win or loss, total shots, accuracy and time. Send a challenge link to see which friend needs fewer shots, or share a result image. No download or sign-up, on mobile and PC.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q. How do you play Sea Battle?

    A. Place your five ships (5, 4, 3, 3 and 2 cells) on a 10x10 grid, randomly or by hand with rotation. You and the computer then take turns firing one shot at a coordinate. Hits, misses and sunk ships are marked, and whoever sinks the entire enemy fleet first wins.

  • Q. What is the difference between the easy, normal and hard AI?

    A. Easy fires completely at random. Normal hunts the neighboring cells once it scores a hit, while hard aims with a probability map and a checkerboard search, then finishes off any ship it has hit. Start on easy to learn, then test your strategy on hard.

  • Q. What is a good Sea Battle strategy?

    A. Spread your early shots in a checkerboard pattern, since every ship covers at least two cells. After a hit, fire at the neighboring cells to find the ship's direction. Fewer shots means a better score to beat in the challenge link.
