Othello Battle
Play real-time Othello (Reversi) with friends! Sandwich your opponent's pieces on an 8×8 board, flip them, and win with the most discs.
How to Play
- Black moves first. You can only play where you trap at least one opponent disc between yours; legal squares show a faint dot.
- Pick a square and tap Place. Every trapped disc, in all eight directions, flips to your color.
- No legal move? Your turn passes automatically. The game ends when the board is full or neither side can move.
- Whoever has more discs on the board at the end wins; an equal count is a draw.
- You have 15 seconds per move. Run out and you lose on time.

Othello is the disc-flipping board game known generically as Reversi. A game starts with two black and two white discs crossed in the centre of an 8×8 board, and Black moves first. Every move must trap at least one opponent disc between the new disc and one of yours, and all trapped discs in any of the eight directions flip at once. Legal squares show a faint dot: tap one, then press Place to confirm. If you have no legal move your turn passes automatically, and the game ends when the board is full or neither side can move. More discs wins; an equal count is a draw.
To play a friend, create a room and send the invite link — they join straight from a browser, no install needed. Random Match drops you into a room where someone is already waiting. The guest taps Ready and the host starts the game. The host plays Black in the first game and colours swap with every rematch; anyone who arrives after the two players watches as a spectator. Each move has a 15-second clock, and running out loses the game on time. If your opponent drops mid-game, the game waits 30 seconds and then awards the win to whoever is still there. Opponents and spectators see your auto-generated nickname, and chat — open before and after a game and while spectating — is visible to everyone in the room, so keep personal details out of it.
Playing solo? Choose one of 18 AI levels, from 9 kyu up to 1 kyu and then 1 dan to 9 dan. The 9–7 kyu bots only evaluate the next move and mix in plenty of randomness, the other kyu levels search 2–4 moves ahead, and the dan levels 4–8. From 6 kyu up, the AI also reads the endgame out to the last disc once few enough squares are left — 20 for 9 dan — and it thinks for up to 10 seconds per move. Kyu and dan here are this game’s difficulty scale, not official ratings. You take Black in the first game and colours swap on rematch. Your best win — highest level beaten and disc margin — is saved in this browser; there is no online leaderboard.
New to the game? Go for the corners: a corner disc can never be flanked, so it never flips. The three squares touching a corner tend to hand that corner to your opponent, so avoid them early, and keep your options open instead of grabbing discs — having more legal moves usually matters more than having more discs. Othello is a registered trademark of MegaHouse; this is an unofficial Reversi game with the same rules and is not affiliated with MegaHouse.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do you play Othello (Reversi)?
A. You can only place a disc where it traps at least one opponent disc between it and one of yours; every trapped disc in all eight directions flips. Black moves first, a player with no legal move passes automatically, and when the board is full or nobody can move, more discs wins. An equal count is a draw.
Q. How do I play Othello online with a friend?
A. Create a room and share the invite link, and your friend joins from a browser. The host plays Black in the first game, colours swap on every rematch, and anyone who joins after the two players spectates.
Q. How many AI levels are there, and how strong is the AI?
A. There are 18 levels, from 9 kyu to 9 dan. The 9–7 kyu bots look only one move ahead and make mistakes, the dan levels search 4–8 moves deep and read the endgame to the end. The kyu and dan labels are an in-game scale, not official ratings.
Q. Is there a time limit per move?
A. Yes, 15 seconds per move; run out and you lose on time. If your opponent disconnects during an online game, it waits 30 seconds and then gives you the win.
Q. Are Othello and Reversi the same game?
A. They are played with the same rules today. Reversi is the generic name, while Othello is MegaHouse’s trademark for the version that starts with four discs crossed in the centre. This is an unofficial Reversi game using that same starting position.
