Character Counter

Count characters with and without spaces, words, sentences, lines and bytes as you type, with a target-length bar.

Type or paste your text and watch the character count (with and without spaces), bytes, words, sentences and lines update as you write. Handy for application essays, bios, meta descriptions and any box with a character limit.

Your draft is saved automatically, in this browser only.

Bytes (UTF-8)

How most websites and databases store text: ASCII letters and digits take 1 byte, accented letters 2, Korean, Japanese and Chinese characters 3, most emoji 4.

Bytes (double-byte)
0 bytes

The legacy East Asian count (EUC-KR, Shift_JIS, GBK, Big5) some forms still use: ASCII letters, digits and spaces are 1 byte, every other character 2.

Giggleus Character Counter shows the length of any text the moment you type or paste it: characters with spaces, characters without spaces, bytes in UTF-8, a double-byte count, words, sentences and lines. It is free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser, so the text never leaves your device.

Characters are counted the way you see them. An emoji such as 👍 or a flag, an accented letter typed as e + accent, or a Korean syllable built from separate jamo all count as one character. "Without spaces" removes every space, tab and line break. Words are counted between spaces; Japanese and Chinese, which are written without spaces, are split with a dictionary, so treat that number as an estimate.

Two byte counts cover the usual form limits. UTF-8 is what most websites and databases use: 1 byte for ASCII letters and digits, 2 for accented letters, 3 for Korean, Japanese and Chinese, 4 for most emoji. The double-byte count follows legacy East Asian encodings (1 byte for ASCII, 2 for everything else). Set a target length, choose with or without spaces, and a progress bar shows how many characters are left and turns red once you go over. Your draft is saved automatically in this browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q. Does an emoji count as one character?

    A. Yes. The counter counts characters as they appear on screen, so 👍, a flag, an accented letter or a family emoji built from several code points each count as 1. Some sites count emoji as 2 or more internally, so leave a little margin if a form is strict.

  • Q. Does "without spaces" also ignore line breaks?

    A. Yes. The without-spaces count removes every kind of whitespace: regular spaces, tabs, full-width spaces and line breaks.

  • Q. How are bytes calculated?

    A. UTF-8 uses 1 byte for ASCII letters and digits, 2 for accented letters, 3 for Korean, Japanese and Chinese characters and 4 for most emoji. The double-byte count, used by older East Asian systems, gives ASCII 1 byte and every other character 2.

  • Q. Is my text stored or uploaded?

    A. It is never uploaded. Counting happens in your browser, and the draft is kept only in that browser’s local storage until you clear it.
