Ages are as of the birthday in the reference year; subtract 1 if it hasn't come yet. The zodiac animal follows the calendar year, so people born in January or early February, before Lunar New Year, traditionally belong to the previous year's animal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do I work out age from a birth year?
A. Subtract the birth year from the reference year; that gives the age after this year's birthday. If the birthday hasn't come yet, take away one: someone born in 1990 is 36 after their birthday in 2026 and 35 before it.
Q. Which years does the age chart cover?
A. Every birth year from the reference year back 100 years, newest first. The reference year can be this year or up to two years before or after it.
Q. Why might my Chinese zodiac animal be different?
A. The chart assigns the animal by calendar year. Traditionally the animal changes at Lunar New Year, which falls between 21 January and 20 February, so if you were born before it you belong to the previous year's animal.
