How many Japanese words do you actually know? This test uses the yes/no checklist method from vocabulary research: you see 48 words written in kanji, with no furigana or translations, and tick only the ones whose meaning you know. Forty are real words, eight from each of five frequency bands roughly matched to JLPT N5 through N1; the other eight are invented kanji compounds that appear in no dictionary. For each band, your hit rate minus the share of fake words you ticked is multiplied by the estimated size of that band, and the total, capped at 48,000 words, is rounded to the nearest hundred. Each fake word you tick lowers every band by 12.5 percentage points, so guessing does not pay. The JLPT reference level is judged separately from each level’s 8 sample words: it is the highest level you clear in a row from N5 up with at least 75% (6 of 8) after the fake-word deduction. The total estimate counts words across native-speaker frequency bands, so it is not on the same scale as the popular ‘N1 ≈ 10,000 words’ figure. Neither number is an official JLPT result, and the current JLPT does not publish vocabulary counts. Q. How does the Japanese vocabulary size test estimate my vocabulary?
A. It multiplies your hit rate in each of five frequency bands by that band's estimated size and adds them up. You see 48 kanji words (40 real, 8 fake), and the highest possible estimate is 48,000 words.
Q. What happens if I tick a fake word?
A. Your estimate goes down. Each fake word you tick lowers your hit rate in every band by 12.5 percentage points, which cancels out guessing.
Q. Is the JLPT level official?
A. No. It is judged from this test’s own sample words: 8 per level, and you need at least 75% (6 of 8) at every level from N5 up, with 12.5 percentage points taken off for each fake word you tick. Your total estimate is counted across native-speaker frequency bands, so it is not comparable to figures like ‘N1 = 10,000 words’, which come from the old test guidelines and study guides. Since its 2010 revision, the JLPT has not published official vocabulary counts per level.
Q. Are readings or furigana shown?
A. No. Words appear in their usual written form without furigana or translations, so the test measures the vocabulary you recognize when reading.
