How your Venus and Mars signs are worked out

  • Venus orbits the Sun in about 225 days (224.7), but seen from Earth it stays close to the Sun, so it usually spends 3–4 weeks (about 24–26 days) in each sign. When its retrograde (about 40 days, roughly every 19 months) falls in a sign, Venus can stay there for nearly four months.
  • Mars orbits the Sun in about 687 days and usually spends 6–7 weeks (about 40–50 days) in each sign. When its retrograde (2–2.5 months, roughly every 26 months) falls in a sign, Mars can stay there for more than seven months.
  • Venus and Mars move at most a little over 1° a day, so most people get a definite sign without a birth time. If one of them changed signs on your birthday, the result tells you.
  • Signs use the tropical zodiac (12 equal parts measured from the March equinox). Venus's and Mars's ecliptic longitudes at your birth moment are computed with an astronomy library, right in your browser; your birth details are never sent to a server.

Your Venus sign and Mars sign are the zodiac signs Venus and Mars were in at the moment you were born. In Western astrology, Venus describes how you love, who you're attracted to and how you show affection, while Mars describes your drive, what you want and how you handle conflict. They often explain the parts of your love life your Sun sign alone doesn't.

This free Venus and Mars sign calculator works from your birth date and birth city: it computes Venus's and Mars's positions at your birth moment with an astronomy library, on the tropical zodiac. Venus usually spends 3–4 weeks in a sign and Mars 6–7 weeks, so most people get a definite answer without a birth time; if either planet changed signs on your birthday, the result tells you. It also shows whether Venus or Mars was retrograde when you were born.

Your result covers your Venus sign's love style, attractions and way of showing affection, your Mars sign's way of acting, desires and conflict style, plus a short summary of your Venus × Mars element pairing (fire, earth, air, water). Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q. How do I find my Venus sign?

    A. Enter your birth date and birth city and the calculator works out which sign Venus was in when you were born. Venus usually stays in a sign for 3–4 weeks, so a birth time is only needed if it changed signs on your birthday.

  • Q. What do Venus and Mars signs mean?

    A. In Western astrology, Venus represents how you love, what attracts you and how you show affection; Mars represents your drive, desires and how you get angry. That's why they're often read alongside your Sun sign for relationships.

  • Q. Can my Venus sign be different from my Sun sign?

    A. Yes. Venus is never more than about 47° from the Sun, so your Venus sign is either the same as your Sun sign or up to two signs before or after it. Mars moves independently and can be in any sign.

  • Q. Do I need my birth time to find my Mars sign?

    A. Usually not. Mars moves less than 1° a day and spends about 6–7 weeks in a sign, so your birth date is almost always enough. If Mars changed signs on your birthday, the result asks for your birth time.
